FAQ’s

Where do our butterflies come from?

All our butterfly specimen come from ethically sourced butterflyfarms all around the world. These breedingfarms are helping to maintain the natural butterfly population but also preserve the natural habitats with it’s many flora and fauna. Well-known examples of these habitats are the various tropical rainforests and the Amazon regions.

Instead of cutting down tropical rainforests, local communities now participate in these conservation projects that provide them with fair employment, income and livelihoods.

Were the butterflies still alive during the preparation and pinning process?

No definitely not! The butterflies we process have lived their full cycle on tropical butterfly farms. From egg to caterpillar, from pupa to butterfly, to find a partner where the whole cycle starts all over again for the next generation. Due to the full life course you can therefore find some natural damage to the wings. After they died they are dried and sold.

Collecting tropical butterflies does not speed up their extinction. In fact, in the wild less than 8% of butterfly eggs will reach adulthood. In contrast, captive breeding programs on butterfly farms achieve 70%-90% survival rate. The farms also release up to 20% of all generations back into the wild, helping to preserve the insects in their natural habitat.

How do we collect our feathers?

Birds go through a natural moulting process every year in which the feathers of the previous year are replaced by new ones. The 'old' feathers that the birds naturally shed are then collected and washed. These feathers come from (domesticated) bird keepers and breeders, mainly from the EU and UK. Availability is therefore limited per year and the selection changes regularly. Never wait too long to purchase as they go very quick, when ther’re out of the assortiment it can be you have to wait a year or longer for new specimens.

In addition, a small part of the feathers are also obtained from licenced gamekeepers through game management (EU, UK), in compliance with wildlife conservation laws.
